Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Mini review: Best for small spaces

The Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Mini is a compact soundbar that delivers outstanding audio quality in small spaces. While it may not have the power to fill a large room, it is perfect for a small apartment or bedroom. With support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, easy setup, and impressive sound, this soundbar is a great choice for those looking to upgrade their audio experience in a cozy setting. At a price of £699, it may not be the most budget-friendly option, but the exceptional sound and design from Sennheiser make it worth considering for audio enthusiasts.

Design & setup

The Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Mini is a compact and lightweight soundbar, measuring just 28 x 4 x 2.6 inches and weighing 7.3 pounds. It features six drivers powered by Class D amplifiers, including four full-range cones and two woofers, designed to deliver a 7.1.4 audio experience. With a total amplification power of 250 watts, the soundbar offers excellent sound quality in a smaller package.

To enhance the bass response, Sennheiser recommends adding the optional Ambeo Sub subwoofer to the setup. The subwoofer, measuring 12.2 x 12.2 x 12.2 inches and weighing 18.7 pounds, features an 8-inch proprietary woofer and a 350W Class D amplifier. The Ambeo Sub automatically pairs with the Ambeo Soundbar Mini when turned on, providing the necessary low-end frequencies for a complete audio experience.

Setting up the Ambeo Soundbar Mini is a straightforward process, thanks to the Sennheiser Smart Control app for iOS and Android. Simply plug in the power cord and connect the HDMI cable to the Mini and your television’s HDMI-eARC ports. Use the app to calibrate the system, which involves the soundbar playing a series of beeps to gauge the dimensions of the room. Once the calibration is complete, you’re ready to start enjoying your audio.

Audio and smart features

The Ambeo Soundbar Mini supports various audio formats, including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Sony 360 Reality Audio. It offers multiple music playback options, such as Apple AirPlay 2, Bluetooth SBC or AAC, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, and Tidal Connect. With built-in Alexa, you can control the soundbar using voice commands for a hands-free experience.

The soundbar also features equalization presets, including Adaptive, Music, Movie, News, Neutral, and Sports. The Adaptive setting adjusts the sound based on the content being played, providing optimized audio for different scenarios. Additionally, the Ambeo button enables the soundbar’s virtual surround setting, creating a more immersive listening experience.

For added convenience, the Mini includes a Night Mode option to reduce loud audio spikes in action-packed movies and a Voice Enhancement option to enhance dialog clarity. These additional features allow you to customize the sound to suit your preferences and create the perfect audio environment.

The Ambeo Soundbar Mini comes with the SB02-RC remote, which offers convenient control over the soundbar. The remote includes buttons for volume adjustments, source selection, and processing modes, such as Movie, Music, Adaptive, and more. However, one notable drawback of the remote is the absence of a dedicated mute button, which can be an inconvenience for those who frequently use the mute function.

Instead, the remote features an “O” multifunction button that serves as a mute button. However, its performance can be slightly laggy, especially when the Mini’s Alexa capabilities are activated. Pressing the “O” button for three seconds activates the mute function, which may not be as intuitive or quick as a dedicated mute button. Overall, the remote offers a user-friendly interface with easily accessible controls.

Audio performance

While the Ambeo Soundbar Mini delivers stellar audio performance in smaller spaces, it has limitations when used in larger rooms. The soundbar is designed to deliver a 7.1.4 simulated surround sound experience, but its 250W output may struggle to fill a larger space compared to its larger siblings, the Ambeo Soundbar Plus and Max, which offer 400W and 500W output, respectively.

In larger rooms, the Mini’s audio performance may lack the immersive and powerful surround sound experience it provides in smaller spaces. However, when used as intended in a small apartment or bedroom, the soundbar offers an exceptional audio experience with Sennheiser’s signature sound quality.

To overcome any potential limitations in bass response, Sennheiser recommends pairing the Mini with the Ambeo Sub subwoofer. Adding the subwoofer enhances the low-frequency performance, ensuring a more complete audio experience. The Ambeo Sub can be connected wirelessly to the Mini and automatically pairs with it when turned on.

Should you buy the Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Mini?

The Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Mini is an excellent choice for those living in small apartments or looking to upgrade the audio in a bedroom. Its compact size and outstanding sound quality make it a perfect fit for cozy spaces. However, if you’re looking for a soundbar to be the centerpiece of your home theater in a larger room, the Mini may not deliver the same level of audio performance.

Consider more affordable alternatives if you’re not willing to invest $799.99 in a soundbar for a second room. The Sonos Beam (second-gen) offers virtual Dolby Atmos support for $449.99, the Polk Audio React delivers fantastic stereo sound for $199, and the Roku Streambar provides solid audio performance with built-in Roku streaming-video capabilities for just $99.
